Clare Rojas

Clare Rojas can boast of many exhibitions and artistic prizes and her works are to be found in important collections such as that of the MoMA. From the mid 1990s to the beginning of the 2000s, she was part of the Mission School, a small art scene in San Francisco known for its cooperative and communal nature, at times described as Urban Rustic or even Digital Bohemians. For the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, it is the “most significant movement to emerge from San Francisco since the 1990s”. This movement included artists such as Barry McGee, Margaret Kilgallen, Chris Johanson, Alicia McCarthy, Ruby Neri and Thomas Campbell.
Far more than a style, they would inspire an attitude among many artists, in particular Maya Hayuk, Paul Wackers and Atelier Pica Pica.
Over the years, the paintings, installations and videos of Clare Rojas would go from the figurative to the more abstract. Today, there is a sort of geometric narrative in her work. A restricted pallet of colours and sharp geometric forms combine to create tension and a primal interaction in her abstract paintings.
Alongside writing, painting and video, music also has an important place in her creations. Under the name of Peggy Honeywell, she plays the guitar and sings in her own folk bluegrass style.

Clare Rojas compte à son actif de nombreuses expositions en institutions, des prix artistiques et fait partie de collections importantes comme celle du MoMA. Du milieu des nineties au début des années 2000, elle est assimilée à la Mission School, une petite scène artistique de San Francisco connue pour son caractère collaboratif et communautaire, parfois qualifiée d’Urban Rustic ou même de Digital Bohemians. Pour le San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, c’est « Le mouvement le plus significatif qui émerge de San Francisco à la fin des années 90 ». Parmi les artistes, on pouvait trouver Barry McGee, Margaret Kilgallen, Chris Johanson, Alicia McCarthy, Ruby Neri et Thomas Campbell.
Plus qu’un style, ils vont inspirer une attitude à de très nombreux artistes, notamment Maya Hayuk, Paul Wackers et Atelier Pica Pica.
Avec les années, les peintures, les installations et les vidéos de Clare Rojas vont passer du figuratif à l’abstrait. Aujourd’hui il y a une sorte de récit géométrique dans son travail. Une palette de couleurs restreinte et des formes géométriques acérées se déclinent pour créer une tension, une interaction primale dans ses peintures abstraites.
A côté de l’écriture, la peinture et la vidéo, la musique tient elle aussi une place importante au sein de sa création. Sous le nom de Peggy Honeywell, elle joue avec sa voix et sa guitare dans son style « folk-bluegrass ».

Clare Rojas heeft meerdere tentoonstellingen en kunstprijzen op haar naam staan. Haar werk is te zien in beroemde collecties zoals die van het MoMA. Van medio jaren negentig tot begin jaren 2000 maakte ze deel uit van de Mission School, een kunstbeweging in San Francisco die op samenwerking en op de gemeenschap was gericht en die ook wel Urban Rustic of Digital Bohemians wordt genoemd. Volgens het San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is dit “de meest betekenisvolle beweging in het San Francisco van eind jaren 90“. Onder de leden bevonden zich kunstenaars als Barry McGee, Margaret Kilgallen, Chris Johanson, Alicia McCarthy, Ruby Neri en Thomas Campbell.
De beweging omvatte meer dan alleen een stijl. Ze vormde een inspiratiebron voor kunstenaars wereldwijd, onder wie Maya Hayuk, Paul Wackers en Atelier Pica Pica.
De schilderijen, installaties en video’s van Clare Rojas vertonen met de jaren een ontwikkeling van figuratief naar abstract. Op dit moment is in haar werk een soort geometrisch discours te zien. Een beperkt keurenpalet en scherpe geometrische vormen verlenen haar abstracte schilderijen een spanning, een oerinteractie.
Rojas schrijft, schildert en maakt video’s. Daarnaast neemt ook muziek een belangrijke plaats in in haar artistiek leven. Onder de naam Peggy Honeywell speelt ze gitaar en zingt ze in een stijl die folk-bluegrass genoemd kan worden.
