Born in 1968 in San Jose, California, he lives and works in Los Angeles. This skateboard and punk rock fan is self-taught and started out painting skateboards… and the city walls.
Chris Johanson is one of the figures of the “Mission School” in San Francisco, along with Barry McGee and Alicia McCarthy. The Mission School (sometimes referred to as “New Folk” or “Urban Rustic”) is an artistic movement that grew in the 1990s and 2000s and that took hold in the Mission District, in San Francisco, California.
His naive and brilliant abstracts address the complex emotions of adult life. He claims to be highly influenced in his work and subjects by his Californian lifestyle. This comes across in the energy his works exude and in their meditative and colourful style in conjunction with a cartoon like language.
His works are to be found in many collections, such as those of the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the Whitney Museum in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and the Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Né en 1968 à San Jose en Californie, Chris Johanson vit et travaille à Los Angeles. Ce passionné de skateboard et de punk rock est autodidacte. Il a commencé par peindre des planches de skate et sur les murs de la ville.
