David Shrigley is a Scottish artist, born in 1968 in Macclesfield, England. In 1991, he graduated from the School of Fine Arts of Glasgow in environmental art. He began his career by publishing collections of his drawings, the artist’s book remains an important medium in his work. At this early stage of development, he also produced drawings for various major newspapers such as The Guardian and The Independent.
Music also plays an important role in his work. He has, among others, designed a video for Blur. And in 2006, he released his first slam poetry album “Shrigley Forced to Speak With Others.”
Shrigley has applied his characteristic style and wit to a wide range of media, from both large-scale installations to movies and painting. From a stylistic point of view, his works are composed of pure, simple line work, similar in immediacy to the naive aesthetic of a children’s drawing. They differ greatly however in their treatment – Shrigley examines his subjects with an incisive and satirical humor, commenting on human relationships and daily life.
Today his works are found in a number of important collections such as the MoMA in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago or the Museum Ludwig in Cologne.

David Shrigley est un artiste écossais, né en 1968 à Macclesfield, en Angleterre. Depuis 1991, il est diplômé en art environnemental de l’Ecole des Beaux Arts de Glasgow. Il débute sa carrière en éditant ses croquis sous forme de compilation, le livre d’artiste étant un medium important au sein de son œuvre. A ses débuts, il réalise aussi des dessins de presse pour différents grands quotidiens tels que The Guardian et The Independent.
La musique joue elle aussi un rôle important dans son travail. Il va entre autres réaliser un clip pour Blur. Et en 2006, il sort son premier album de slam “Shrigley Forced to Speak with Others”.
Shrigley exploite de nombreux médiums pour ses créations, allant aussi bien d’une installation à grande échelle à une animation ou une peinture. D’un point de vue stylistique, ses œuvres sont constituées de traits purs et simples, proches de l’esthétique enfantine. Toutefois, il traite toujours le sujet avec un humour incisif et satirique, qui lui permet de faire passer ses commentaires sur les relations humaines et les situations quotidiennes.
Aujourd’hui ses œuvres sont présentes au sein de nombreuses collections importantes telles que celles du MoMA de New York, de l’Art Institute de Chicago ou encore du Ludwig Museum de Cologne.

De Schotse artiest David Shrigley werd geboren in Macclesfield, Engeland in 1968. In 1991 studeerde hij af aan de School of Fine Arts of Glasgow in de richting ‘environmental art’. Hij begon zijn carrière met het publiceren van de verzamelingen van zijn tekeningen; het kunstenaarsboek blijft dan ook een belangrijk medium in zijn werk. In die vroege periode maakte hij ook tekeningen voor verschillende grote kranten zoals The Guardian en The Independent.
Muziek speelt een belangrijke rol in zijn werk. Zo heeft hij bijvoorbeeld een muziekvideo voor Blur ontworpen. In 2006 publiceerde hij zijn eerste slam poetry album: “Shrigley Forced to Speak with Others”.
Shrigley hanteert een karakteristieke stijl, die gepaard gaat met scherpzinnige humor. Hij gebruikt een hele reeks aan verschillende media, gaande van installaties op grote schaal tot films en schilderijen. Op vlak van esthetiek vinden we in zijn werk pure en simpele lijnen terug, die doen denken aan directheid van de naïeve esthetiek van een kindertekening. Toch verschillen ze erg in aanpak – Shrigley onderzoekt zijn onderwerpen met een scherpzinnige en satirische humor, en uit zo zijn bedenkingen op de relaties tussen mensen en het dagelijkse leven.
Vandaag is zijn werk te zien in een aantal belangrijke collecties zoals het MoMA in New York, het Art Institute of Chicago en het Museum Ludwig in Keulen.
