Elzo Durt

MIMA - seri_elzo_mauvaise-graine_sept_2009

At the time (2003), I used to organize all sorts of punk and techno concerts and evenings. Very soon, I started being part of every scoop, every party and found myself making flyers for all Brussels. But it has never been my ambition to overrun anything. I am somewhat of a perfectionist for work, but at the same time I am a party animal.

Interview by Adrien Pontet, Les Inrockuptibles, 2017.

With more than a hundred exhibitions under his belt, dozens of projects and album covers, Elzo Durt (1980) is one of the most productive and most recognizable illustrators of the age. After spending a decade or so to impose a heavy and abrasive style consisting of creepy, psyched, hard hitting collages in the Brussels punk and techno scenes, he colonized the imagination of French rockers by becoming the flagship illustrator of Born Bad Records  and by creating his own label, Teenage Menopause.

From flyers to 4 x 3 posters, from squats to art galleries, his works grew gradually larger, more accomplished and above all open to different audiences. Blending experiences, he has worked together with labels (Carhartt, Redbull studio Paris…) and with the large circulation press (Le Monde, Libération, etc.) whilst always retaining the same vein: decidedly punk and DIY.
