The Panopticon is a type of institutional building and system of control designed to allow a single watchman to observe all the inmates without them being able to tell whether or not they are being watched. Since each inmate never knows exactly when he or she is being watched, they adjust their behavior as if they are being watched at all times. Sound familiar?
