Brecht Vandenbroucke
Born in 1986, he lives in Antwerp.
His satirical work denounces the shortcomings of the current hyper-connected society and the conformity it entails and champions the idea of a cosmopolitan society with multiple identities.
For “Art Is Comic”, the gigantic “foosball” player facing a throng of small players is a work that illustrates inequalities between people. The visitor is free to imagine which inequality is at issue, but also to choose with which team he would play.
His work spans illustrations for the press (New York Times, Le Monde, etc.), exhibitions, books, publications on the social networks and collaborations.
“I don’t try to express myself through my work, it’s not about me. It’s about the world we live in and the tensions between people…… it’s more about playing with certain codes and pushing back the limits.
At the moment I’m really having fun making jokes about big companies like Apple and Vevo, for example.
I want to do a progressive work and do it thoroughly … and this is essential because I just don’t like how big corporations invade our privacy and treat people like numbers. I don’t care if people think it’s pretentious … you know, if I don’t do it, maybe nobody else will.”

Son œuvre satirique dénonce les travers de notre monde hyper connecté et son conformisme latent en militant pour une société cosmopolite aux identités multiples.
Pour l’exposirion “Art Is Comic”, le gigantesque joueur du « baby foot », construit spécialement pour l’exposition, faisant face à une multitude de petits joueurs est une œuvre qui illustre les inégalités. Libre au visiteur d’imaginer de quelle inégalité il s’agit et de choisir avec quelle équipe il jouerait.
Il diffuse son travail par le biais d’illustrations pour la presse (New York Times, Le Monde…), d’expositions,
de livres, de publications sur les réseaux sociaux et de collaborations.
« Je n’essaye pas de m’exprimer à travers mon travail, ce n’est pas à propos de moi. Il s’agit du monde dans lequel nous vivons et des tensions entre les gens…il s’agit plus de jouer avec certains codes et de repousser les limites. Depuis peu, je m’amuse vraiment à faire des blagues sur les grandes entreprises comme Apple et Vevo, par exemple. Je veux faire un travail progressiste et le faire à fond… et c’est essentiel car je n’aime tout simplement pas comment les grandes sociétés envahissent notre vie privée et traitent les gens comme des numéros. Je m’en fous si les gens pensent que c’est prétentieux … vous savez, si je ne le fais pas, peut-être que personne d’autre ne le fera. »

Zijn satirisch werk stelt het gedrag aan de kaak van de hypergeconnecteerde maatschappij van vandaag en haar latente conformisme en verdedigt het idee van een kosmopolitische samenleving met meerdere identiteiten.
De reusachtige kickerspeler die het opneemt tegen talloze kleine spelers, is een werk dat ongelijkheid illustreert. De bezoeker kan zelf de ongelijkheid in kwestie invullen en ook kiezen bij welk van beide teams hij of zij zou spelen.
Hij verspreidt zijn werk via illustraties voor gedrukte media (New York Times,
Le Monde enz.), tentoonstellingen, boeken, publicaties op sociale netwerken en samenwerkingen.
“Ik probeer mezelf niet uit te drukken in mijn werk, het gaat niet over mezelf. Het gaat om de wereld waarin we leven en de spanningen tussen de mensen, om spelen met bepaalde codes en het verleggen van grenzen. Sinds kort amuseer ik me echt met grappen maken over grote ondernemingen als Apple en Vevo.
Ik wil progressieve werken creëren en ga daar voluit voor. Het is ook essentieel, want ik ben absoluut niet te spreken over de manier waarop grote bedrijven ons privéleven binnendringen en mensen als nummers behandelen. Het zal me worst wezen als men dit pretentieus vindt … Weet je, als ik het niet doe, dan is het mogelijk dat niemand anders het doet.”
