Created in 1999 and based in Brooklyn, FAILE is the artistic partnership of Patrick McNeil (1975) and Patrick Miller (1976). The duo were also associated with the Japanese artist Aiko Nakagawa (1975) until 2006. The artistic duo are known for their post-punk pop aesthetic of pulp images, which they glue, paint and print in a variety of media and installations.
FAILE are largely influenced by the artists of the sixties such as Lichtenstein, Basquiat and Rauschenberg but also by pop culture, comic books and nostalgic imagery in general. The work is a critique of consumerism whilst it feeds itself on it. It also addresses religious themes and the influence of the media.
They have accumulated many successful collaborations, particularly in the the worlds of fashion and the music- from New York to Ulan Bator via Manilla, London or Lisbon, FAILE’s work occupies public spaces and is shown in international institutions such as the Tate Modern in 2008, the Dallas Contemporary and the New York City Ballet in 2013. The Brooklyn Museum devoted a retrospective to their work in 2015.

Créé en 1999 et basé à Brooklyn, FAILE est un partenariat artistique composé de Patrick McNeil (1975) et Patrick Miller (1976). Ils sont associés avec l’artiste japonaise, Aiko Nakagawa (1975) jusqu’en 2006. Le duo est connu pour son esthétique post-punk aux images dynamiques qu’ils collent, peignent et impriment dans différents médiums et installations.
FAILE est largement influencé par les artistes des sixties tels que Lichtenstein, Basquiat et Rauschenberg mais aussi par la culture pop, les comics et l’imagerie vintage en général. Leur travail est une critique du consumérisme tout en s’en nourrissant. Ils abordent aussi les thèmes de la religion et de l’influence des médias.
Ils ont réalisé de nombreuses collaborations, notamment avec le monde de la mode et celui de la musique. De New York à Ulan-Bator, en passant par Manille, Londres ou Lisbonne, le travail de FAILE investit l’espace public et a aussi été exposé dans des institutions internationales telles que la Tate Modern en 2008, le Dallas Contemporary et le New York City Ballet en 2013. Le Brooklyn Museum leur a dédié une rétrospective en 2015.

FAILE is opgericht in 1999 en gevestigd in Brooklyn. Het is een samenwerkingsverband van twee artiesten, Patrick McNeil (1975) en Patrick Miller (1976). Tot 2006 was ook de Japanse artiest Aiko Nakagawa (1975) betrokken bij hun project. Het kunstenaarsduo is bekend om hun postpunkpopesthetiek met dynamische beelden, die ze plakken, schilderen en drukken op een hele reeks aan media en installaties.
Hun inspiratie vinden ze bij kunstenaars uit de jaren ’60 zoals Lichtenstein, Basquiat en Rauschenberg, maar ook in de popcultuur, stripverhalen en ander nostalgisch beeldmateriaal. FAILE bekritiseert het consumptiegedrag, maar dat consumptiegedrag is ook net de voedingsbodem van hun werk. Ze staan bovendien stil bij religieuze thema’s en de invloed van de media.
Ze hebben al veel samenwerkingen op hun naam staan, vooral met de mode- en muziekwereld. Van New York tot Ulan-Bator en van Manilla tot Londen en Lissabon: de kunst van FAILE is terug te vinden in de straten en wordt tentoongesteld in internationale instellingen zoals Tate Modern in 2008, Dallas Contemporary en het New York City Ballet in 2013. Het Brooklyn Museum wijdde in 2015 een retrospectieve aan hun werk.
