Local Heroes combines, in the manner of the ancient Greek gymnasium, exercises of the body and the mind. For 4 months, MIMA is a temple of boxing and arts interacting with the visitor.
Local Heroes is a reinterpretation of the ancient Greek gymnasium: a place dedicated to the education of youth in the values of the city through sport and the arts. In this logic, the spaces in the exhibition are reserved either for the practice of boxing or for the celebration of local athletes. The whole is enhanced by artistic interventions born from the meeting between creators and boxers. Posters, photographs, videos and wall paintings are the favourite mediums in the aesthetics of boxing.
The choice of boxing is based on a historical, social and cultural reason. Firstly, the ancestor of boxing, pugilism, was widely practiced in gymnasiums throughout antiquity. Secondly, the boxing community sociologically reflects the youth of the Brussels city centre. Finally, compared to other sports, it is a major source of inspiration for the arts.

Local Heroes
Local Heroes associe, à la manière du gymnase grec antique, les exercices du corps et de l’esprit. Pendant 4 mois, le MIMA est un temple de boxe et d’arts interagissant avec le visiteur.
En tant gymnase/musée, l’univers de la boxe est présentée de manière vivante. En marge des oeuvres exposées sur 3 étages, des boxeurs/euses de haut niveau viennent s’entrainer et jouer avec vous dans la salle d’entrainement.
Local Heroes est une réinterprétation du gymnase grec antique : un lieu dédié à l’éducation de la jeunesse aux valeurs de la cité par le biais du sport et des arts. Dans cette logique, les espaces dans l’exposition sont réservés soit à la pratique de la boxe, soit à la célébration des sportifs locaux. L’ensemble est agrémenté d’interventions artistiques nées de la rencontre entre créateurs et boxeurs. Affiches, photographies, vidéos, peinture mural sont des médiums de prédilection dans l’esthétique de la boxe.
Le choix de la boxe est fondé sur une raison à la fois historique, sociale et culturelle. Premièrement, l’ancêtre de la boxe, le pugilat, était largement pratiqué dans les gymnases pendant tout l’antiquité. Ensuite, la communauté des boxeurs reflète sociologiquement la jeunesse du centre-ville bruxellois. Enfin, par rapport aux autres sports, elle est une source d’inspiration majeur pour les arts.

Local Heroes
Local Heroes combineert, naar het voorbeeld van het oude Griekse gymnasium, oefeningen voor lichaam en geest. Gedurende 4 maanden is het MIMA een tempel van boksen en kunst in interactie met de bezoeker.
Local Heroes is een herinterpretatie van het oude Griekse gymnasium: een plaats gewijd aan de opvoeding van jongeren in maatschappelijke waarden door middel van sport en kunst. In deze logica zijn de ruimten in de tentoonstelling gereserveerd voor de beoefening van het boksen of voor de huldiging van lokale atleten. Het geheel wordt versterkt door artistieke ingrepen die voortkomen uit de ontmoeting tussen makers en boksers. Posters, foto’s, video’s en muurschilderingen zijn de favoriete media in de boksesthetiek.
De keuze voor boksen is gebaseerd op een historische, sociale en culturele reden. Ten eerste werd de voorouder van het boksen, het pugilisme, in de oudheid op grote schaal beoefend in gymnasiums. Ten tweede weerspiegelt de boksgemeenschap sociologisch de jeugd van de Brusselse binnenstad. Ten slotte is het in vergelijking met andere sporten een belangrijke inspiratiebron voor de kunsten.
